GEICO Skytypers SNJ-2 small plane crash in Melville, Pilot dead

A SNJ-2, a U.S. Navy version of the T6 Texan, was one of the GEICO Skytypers crashed in a wooded area of Long Island, Melville, killing the pilot

The “propeller-type” plane appeared to break into pieces before it hit the ground

The pilot, identified as 52-year-old Ken Johansen, was the only person on board.

Johansen was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, a Navy aviator, and a professional pilot according to Skytypers. The native of Doylestown, Pennsylvania leaves behind a wife and two children.

Former navy pilot Johansen died

Four aerobatic planes was flying in a two-by-two formation. Then, the plane flown by Johansen separated from the rest and took a plunge.

The two-seater plane, built around 1940, was designed to train fighter pilots for the U.S. war effort.

The vintage aircraft are flown by the GEICO Skytypers, a perennial feature of the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach.

Their stunt pilots perform a wide range of aerial maneuvers while ‘typing’ out messages made of puffs of smoke.

The reason of the crash is still unknown
