Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed near Belfast Airport on Thursday afternoon, PSNI confirmed
“Emergency services received a report of a crash shortly after 12.30 pm this afternoon. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will examine the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
Mr. Greenwood, from Larne, was an aerial photographer and Mr. Farmbrough was a former airline captain.
The retired commercial airline pilot was originally from England but was living in Carrickfergus, County Antrim.
They were in a small plane, thought to be a Cessna, that crashed between Nutts Corner and Loanends.
Both Mr. Greenwood and Mr. Farmbrough’s family and friends have paid warm tributes to them on social media.
Mr. Farmbrough was a highly experienced pilot who worked for a number of airlines, including Inter European Airways; Airtours International Airways, and British Regional Airlines (which operated British Airways flights from Belfast).
“Cordons have been placed in the area surrounding the aircraft to maintain the integrity of the scene as the investigation continues. I would ask that the cordons are respected by all and directions from officers at the scene are heeded.
The plane, thought to be a Cessna, came down close to Nutts Corner roundabout and the Loanends Road at around 12.20 pm on Thursday.
Air Accidents Investigation Branch officers have been sent to the scene.
SDLP Lagan Valley MLA Pat Catney said: “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the ongoing incident at Nutts Corner following a crash.
“Thinking of all of those involved at this difficult time.”
