A Vietnam Air Force Sukhoi Su-22M4 crashes during landing at Yên Bái Air Base. The pilot died and the aircraft was destroyed.
Su-22M4 operated by the 371st Air Force Division ‘Thang Long’ / 921 Fighter Regiment, suffered issues during a regular training flight and crashed when landing.
At 12:09 p.m., Tran Ngoc Duy piloted the aircraft for a training session. At 12:27 p.m., while landing, the plane encountered an issue.
The pilot was ordered to parachute out of the aircraft, but he tried to fix it instead. The plane eventually crashed and he died.
Duy, 31, from Yen Bai Province, was the Deputy Squadron Commander and Deputy Chief of Squadron 1, part of Air Force Division 921.
Vietnam’s defense ministry has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Soviet-developed Su-22 fighter jet has been in service since the 1970s, with Vietnam acquiring a limited number of Su-22/UM aircraft starting in 1979.
