U.S. Phalanx CIWS Aircraft carrier Cannon that can Fires 4,500 Rounds a Minute

Have a look at  USS George H.W. Bush  Aircraft carrier Cannon that can Fire 4,500 Rounds a Minute. The Phalanx CIWS is the nickname given to a 20mm Vulcan Cannon on board the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier.

 

It fires 4,500 rounds a minute, can hit a target five miles away and has bullets that are twice the normal size.

The Phalanx CIWS  is a close-in weapon system for defense against anti-ship missiles.

It consists of a radar-guided 20 mm Vulcan cannon mounted on a swiveling base

20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon is linked to a Ku-band radar system for acquiring and tracking targets. The CIWS is a radar-guided 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon used primarily for defence against anti-ship missiles.

It is installed on all U.S. Navy surface combatant ships and is capable of locking onto incoming missiles and firing 4,500 rounds per minute.

The entire unit has a mass between 12,400 to 13,500 lb (5,600 to 6,100 kg).

Because of their distinctive barrel-shaped radome and their automated nature of the operation, Phalanx CIWS units are sometimes nicknamed “R2-D2” after the famous droid character from the Star Wars films
