Four dead in Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopter crash in Istanbul

Türk Kara Kuvvetleri (Turkish Army) Bell UH-1 helicopter crashed in Çekmeköy, Istanbul, in front of a park for unknown reasons. All 4 occupants were killed.

The helicopter crashed in a residential area of Istanbul while trying to make an emergency landing, killing four soldiers on board, Turkish officials said.

In the statement made by the Ministry’s Twitter account, “Istanbul / 4th UH-1 type helicopter belonging to the 4th Land Aviation Regiment Command, crashed in Çekmeköy for an unknown reason.

“Unfortunately four of our soldiers became martyrs,” Istanbul governor Ali Yerlikaya told reporters at the scene.

The UH-1 type helicopter crashed on the grounds of a housing complex in the Cekmekoy district on Istanbul’s Asian side, Gov. Ali Yerlikaya told reporters at the site. No one on the ground was hurt.

Pilot captain Ümit Özer li, Captain Semih Özcan, sergeant Sergeant İlyas Kaya and NCO Sergeant Yakup Avşar fell martyr.

The four soldiers in Monday’s crash were hospitalized with injuries but Yerlikaya later told reporters they did not survive.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. The military said it had launched an investigation. 

It was the second UH-1 crash in a residential area in Istanbul in the past three months.
