The IAF ordered an initial number of 40 Tejas fighters, with another 83 Tejas Mark-1A jets “with 43 improvements” on the line. The total cost of developing and producing these 123 Tejas, of which only 12 have been delivered so far, is estimated at more than 75 billion rupees.
The IAF is also open to the introduction of 201 Tejas Mark-II, equipped with much better avionics and radars, greater fuel transport capacity and more powerful weapons and engines.
