The Mikoyan MiG-29M  is a is a fourth generation multirole fighter that was developed as an advanced variant of the MiG-29.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this point, the Egyptian pilot managed to eject safely.

No further details on the modification of MiG-29 aircraft have been released.

The Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that the aircraft, which crashed during a training flight, had been delivered to Egypt under a commercial contract in 2018.

“We have operational information about a crash of an Egyptian Air Force MiG-29M. In the near future, our technical experts will go to Egypt to assist in the investigation into the incident,” the United Aircraft Corporation confirmed.

Reporting on the issue, Kommersant earlier noted that the pilot managed to eject from the aircraft before the crash, and he was out of danger.

MiG-29 fighter jet was supplied by Russia to Egypt as part of a commercial contract in 2018.

The corporation, which unites state-owned military and civilian aircraft construction companies, did not provide possible reasons for the crash. It could not immediately be reached for comment.

The MiG-29M/M2 is a major development of the legacy MiG-29, boasting design changes to the airframe, improved turbofans in the RD-33MK (which is similar in weight to the RD-33, but benefits from a higher thrust rating and full-authority digital engine control), fly-by-wire flight control system, updated avionics and Zhuk-ME pulse-Doppler radar.

Russia is due to supply 46 MiG-29 fighter planes to Egypt based on an agreement signed in 2015, Vedomosti newspaper said at the time, citing two sources in the aircraft industry.
