A MiG-21 Lancer of the Romanian Air Force crashed under unknown circumstances in the Mureș. The pilot ejected safely but was injured. He was transferred to a hospital.
According to a MApN statement, a MiG 21 LanceR aircraft from the 71st Air Base Cîmpia Turzii, which was performing a training flight, crashed on Tuesday, April 20, around 14:30, near Dedrad, Mureș County, in an uninhabited area.
The pilot ejected safely and he is a conscious condition having complaints of low back pain.
The MiG-21 jet crashed very close to the air base.
Also, the General Aviation Inspectorate (IGAv) with the Interior Ministry (MAI) informed that a SMURD rescue helicopter from Targu Mures was sent to the scene for rescue.
Authorities have opened an investigation to see what led to the plane crash.
The MiG-21 Lancer is made in Russia and is very old. The MiGs equipped in Romanian military aviation were manufactured in the 70s and 80s.
Two months ago, the Ministry of National Defense announced that all aircraft of this type have been repaired.
