Yakovlev Yak-3 Warbird crashed at Wanaka airshow
Yakovlev Yak-3 Warbird crashed at Wanaka airshow. The plane was taxiing on the runway when its wing clipped a cherry picker. The aircraft suffered damage to one wing. The pilot Arthur Dovey’s was not injured.
Warbirds over Wanaka said in a statement “The aircraft, owned by a Wanaka pilot, had touched down on the grass runway but soon afterward a wing clipped a stationary cherry picker near the grass runway, in use for the airshow,”
The pilot of the plane was Arthur Dovey’s. He is a retired Russian airline. He was doing the opening display when his plane crashed at 10 am. After the crash he signaled to the crowd he was okay when he emerged from the mangled plane and walked away from the wreck uninjured. The aircraft however sustained serious damage with part of one wing torn off.
Due to the crash Airshow was delayed 35 minutes.Civil Aviation Authority representative launched a full investigation into the crash. The aircraft was removed after Civil Aviation Authority representative cleared it
