India's S-400 Missile System Could Detect Pakistan Air Force F-16s At Long Range

Turkey tested Russian-made S-400 air defense systems on US-made F-16 fighter jets in November 2019, a source close to the Turkish defense industry told Russian Media agency “TASS”.

On November 25, 2019, CNN Turk reported that various aircraft, including F-16 fighter jets, were scrambled near Ankara to test S-400.

The Turkish military tested the communication between the air defense systems and the aircraft during those exercises.

Turkish Air Force F-16 and F-4 fighter jets carried out Low Level and High altitude flying to testing S-400 system back then to check if the missile system could be tracked and searched in long-range and both 91N6E surveillance and acquisition radar and the 96L6E air search and acquisition radar working in tandem was able to detect F-16s at long range with missile getting firing clearance soon.

Turkey owned S-400 system manned by Mix Russian-Turkish Crew who have been trained for such scenarios and was joined by senior officials of the Turkish Air defense unit as observers were to demonstrate the capabilities of the S-400 Theater air defense system.

Defense analysts believe that it was also done to see if Turkish jets can lure rival jets into the S-400 kill zone and also to see if Identification, friend or foe (IFF) system can differentiate between Two American jets with one playing the aggressor.

This should ring alarm bells in the Islamabad which counts on it American build 70 odd F-16s to provide it air superiority against Indian Air Force in the region in case of full-fledged war takes place between both countries.

The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and an altitude of up to 30 km and can track an Aerial Tanker or AWACS size platforms at a range of 600km and fighter size targets at 400 km.

Indian Defence analysts have been claiming that long-range Radars which comes with S-400 Theater air defense system will ensure that all PAF’s jets, once airborne from their respected air bases, will be picked up the radars of the S-400 due to close proximity of the all the forward airbases of the PAF in its Eastern sector and can S400 will be able to engage up to 36 targets at a time and simultaneously launch 72 missiles.

The impact of the Indian S-400 on Pakistan may be viewed on three distinct stages: during peace, post incursion similar to the Balakot raid and when war is declared.

Even during peace, Pakistan will have to deal with the fallout of the Indian S-400 induction. When operationally deployed to defend along with the French Rafale and the support elements of AEWCs, aerial refuellers and spoofers, aerial raids by the PAF on Indian targets by manned aircraft would become very challenging and costly

In the event of an all-out war between India and Pakistan, the S-400 system would limit the freedom of action of the PAF’s employment of it aerial platforms, particularly the enablers like the AEWC, spoofers, refuellers and transport fleet. Their employment would have to be judiciously planned to keep them out of the S-400 lethal ranges and yet be able to perform their operational tasks.

An all-out war between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan is not likely but cannot be ruled out. In such a scenario, the Indian S-400 system, besides providing a strong defensive shield to the majority of the Indian Vulnerable Areas (VAs) and Vulnerable Points (VPs), can also shoot down PAF combat planes and support platforms well inside Pakistan.

The freedom of operation for the PAF even inside its territory would be limited during the conflict. In addition, the S-400 employed judiciously along with the Indian AWAC platforms can target the PAF interceptors deployed to counter the IAF raids on its VAs and VPs. The PAF would have to come up with options to neutralize the threat to its air defence fighters.

  1. Can it detect my F16

  2. 72 jf17 signatured.. decoyed & disguised.. very low cost.. pilot less as well as piloted suicidal aircrafts.. whose sole life mission/sorty is to fly once in indian direction & get hit with an anti aircraft or BVM s2s messile. they can very easily fool the billions of dollars worth of s400 batteries into confusing, firing & draining themselves out within few minutes.
Pakistan has already manufactured and tested over dozens of such aircrafts in drills with the chinese air defence.
Those extremely light weight & high velocity & maneuverabillity aircrafts appear & detected by enemy radar as f-16, mirage-5 or jf17 or chinese j10. They have extremely low production & operational cost as they are basically designed & built for a one off suicidal flight mission.

    • 400 km engagement for fighter jet .. Not sure and you fail to mention the report from Pakistani side regarding s400 against f16s which is test in China *wink **

    • Still s400 is not inducted in Indian defence system it will be inducted in December 2021 till that time pak air force will be able to combat such system
Pakistan also has ababeel missile having capability of mirv technology which can easily deceive s400
Through reverse technology pak can learn from China as China is operating s400

    • To detect decoys, we already have prithvi, aakash , barak sam don’t worry s-400 will strengthen our air defence, nevertheless we are not totally dependent on it..

  3. India has fought 3 wars with Pakistan, and anything can be expected in the near future, so the Russia should think 10 times before providing S-400 for the sake of humanity. India has declared Pakistan as an enemy state, so Pakistan can definitely expect irresponsible behavior from India. Instead we should fight against poverty, illiteracy etc. Russia is Pakistan’s friend so let’s hope for the best.

  4. Well be sure that the first priority then would be to have the S400 neutralized and all options would be used like air power along with cruise missles from air and land, so S400 would not last more than a few minutes and it would have to power off and duck for cover as all radars no matter how power they are when they are turned on they are also visible to the enemy so as soon as S400 is detected you can be certain that they will be targeted first with standoff weapons and cruise missiles.

Another very interesting point to note is that both China and Turkey which are Pakistans best friends operate S400 so you can be certain that they would pass along any vital piece of information regarding the S400 to Pakistan which they could use and in the near future in joint air exercises with the PAF S400 would also be used so PAF would be able to train on how to neutralize it and find any weakness in it, so this will be a big advantage to PAF if it happens.

  5. I am not sure how this is going to help India. They pretty much lack any understanding of the concept “integrated battle command” & their single force structure isn’t up-to the mark either.

Coming back to S400,2 critical things to be kept in mind –
    1. Any sort of air defense system will require significant physical structure to be put in place to protect itself. In any sort of conflict, those will be the first to be targeted
    2. Once they run out of ammo, ADS is simply a sitting duck waiting to be blown to hell. Until it’s “reloaded” it’s completely vulnerable. Enemy can keep it busy with mock warheads until it runs out of fuel.

Both of India’s adversaries maintain advanced & diversified missile arsenals as well as localized supply chains.
This alone will hold India’s high value ADS asset at cross hair, without even considering the fact that India has economic constraints as it imports everything. How many batteries they can purchase remains uncertain. Throw into that, their eastern neighbor maintains ADS of their own, coupled with the fact that they probably have the most diversified missile arsenal on the planet, this is even without taking their air power threat into account. The threat level in east is several degree of magnitude greater than the threat that is posed by their western neighbor. The recent confrontation means India has no choice but to divert it’s high value assets & resources towards east.
With China occupying most to almost all of it’s resources, i have doubt India can or have the economic strength to put significant amount of assets in place to face their western front,if they can put anything at all.
I can’t help but to think this was the main objective of entire recent China-India saga.

On the bright side though, India can test those S400s shooting down their own Putin branded Sukhois ,MIGs & MIs from even further distance.

  6. RUSSIA DOESN’T SELL THE ORIGINAL PRODUCT TO FOREIGN CUSTOMERS BEWARE DO YOU THINK RUSSIANS ARE DULL

    • Your brighter than most that post and don’t think… Russia is 3 steps ahead of other countries when it comes to warfare. There never going to sell a weapon that can hurt its own.. its not all about the money in Russia.. pride is the most important.! All leaders go to Putin in the end people just don’t get told. 👍

  7. With China having S-400 already , It’s questionable how effective it’s going to be.

  8. As I understand… China has already blocked Russia to sell S-400 to India. China and Russia are partners against USA and India is in the American camp.
Similarly, Russians have also declined Indian requests for the Latest Fighter jets.. Now the Indians have settled for the same old SU 30.
