“A Y8, military aircraft, skidded off the runway due to an engine failure. We are moving the aircraft from the runway,” said U Ye Htut Aung, deputy director general of the Department of Civil Aviation. There were no injuries reported.

Runway operations were temporarily suspended from 11:20pm to 3:20pm. The aircraft was flying to Nyaung-U for training.

Deputy Director General U Ye Htut Aung of the Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed the case. “The airport is closed for a while,” he told The Irrawaddy after the incident.

The Y-8 transport aircraft is produced by Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation in China and based on the Soviet Antonov An-12.

In 2017, a Y-8 military aircraft crashed into the Andaman Sea, killing 122 people. Fourteen crew members and 108 military staff traveling with their families were on board when the plane crashed during its journey from the Tanintharyi Region port town of Myeik to Yangon.

The incident marks the fourth aviation accident this year in Myanmar.

The first accident was on May 8, when a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft carrying 30 passengers and six crew skidded and overran the runway on landing at YIA due to heavy rain and poor visibility, as reported by The Myanmar Times. Nineteen people were reportedly hospitalised for injuries.

The following week, a Myanmar National Airline plane made an emergency landing after its nose wheel failed to extend. There were no injuries.

Last month, Yangon airport was temporarily closed due to the Golden Myanmar Airlines Y5-506 ATR-72-600 aircraft experiencing technical problems with its nose gear upon landing.
