At Least Seven Dead as Plane Crashes In Residential Building in southwest Colombia city

TransPacificos Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain aircraft impacted residential structures shortly after takeoff from Guillermo León Valencia Airport (SKPP), Popayán.

The airplane sustained substantial damage and seven of the nine occupants onboard were fatally injured. Two occupants onboard the aircraft received serious injuries. Five injuries have been reported on the ground.

According to preliminary reports, the plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Guillermo Leon Valencia airport of Popayan, the capital of the Cauca province.

The plane, which crashed at 2.11pm (1911 GMT), was headed from Popayan to Lopez de Micay, both in Cauca department.

The cause of the crash was not known and an investigation was underway, Ganan said.

The country’s civil aviation authority almost immediately began investigating the causes of the fatal crash.
