Update:

The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) has confirmed that two of its aviators have been grounded while an investigation on their flight on a T-34C last month is being carried out.

On Oct. 23, 2018 the duo was found to have flown a pattern that resembles a penis. According to Washington Examiner, any disciplinary or administrative action will not be taken until the completion of the probe into the looping phallic flight path by a T-34C Turbomentor that was posted to Twitter by a tracking site.

The aircraft is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, and the flight in question occurred near Palm Springs.

The Marine Corps has also chosen not to identify the pilots involved in this latest incident, but they did notify the public on Tuesday that both aviators involved have been grounded for the time being.

Maj. Josef Patterson, a spokesman with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, says that “The T-34C crew that is being investigated for flying a pattern resembling an obscene image are currently not flying pending the results of an ongoing investigation. Although not flying, for the time being, the two Marine Corps aviators are still providing vital squadron ground support
functions.”

As we have already reported, some saw multiple offending shapes in the T-34C flight path. However, the shapes would not have been visible to those on the ground and could likely only have been revealed by flight-tracking programs.

A U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) T-34C pilot from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101) is under investigation after it was revealed that his flight path resembles a penis while over the Salton Sea, California on Oct. 23, 2018.

The Marine Corps T-34C crew flew over a remote area of Southern California marking out a phallic shaped pattern with their GPS positions.

The incident was reported by Aircraft Spots, a Twitter account established to monitor the movements of US military planes, on Tuesday as the aircraft, identified as a T-34C, made its way over California’s Salton Sea.

Aircraft Spots initially reported that the plane belonged to the US Navy before issuing a correction that revealed it actually belonged to the US Marine Corps. The plane is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing’s Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

Maj. Josef Patterson, spokesperson for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, told the Marine Corps Times that the drawing casts a dark shadow over the good deeds carried out by the US Marine Corps. However, he was unsure whether the pilot was an instructor or a pilot-in-training.

“I can say that an investigation is underway,” he told the outlet.

An official statement released by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing goes on to stress that the investigation will “uncover the facts and circumstances” surrounding the unexpected appearance of the sky dong.

“The aircrew’s chain of command are committed to maintaining an environment of professionalism, dignity and respect,” the release, obtained by military site Task & Purpose, states. “The Marines and Sailors of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing will perform at the highest levels expected of professional war fighters, and uphold our core values of honor, courage and commitment.”

According to USA Today, some see multiple offending shapes in the flight path. The San Francisco Chronicle also notes that the shapes would not have been visible to those on the ground and could likely only have been revealed by flight-tracking programs.

In November last year, the navy was forced to apologize for a similar incident, when a pilot from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island used a plane to do ‘penis drawings’ in air trails which appeared in the sky above Okanogan, Washington.
