Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Bell UH-1J Helicopter Crashed During Landing

A Bell/Fuji UH-1J Iroquis of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) of 2 Hikotai (Squadron) crashed right-side-up from about 10 meters of altitude during a landing in a hovering training under snow condition.

The co-pilot suffered injuries on his face and skull fracture. The PIC got a bruise on his hand. The main rotor blades were broken.

Whiteout by blown snow may be a factor.

Around 9:30 a.m. at the Ground Self-Defense Force Asahikawa Garrison (Asahikawa City, Hokkaido), a UH1 multi-purpose helicopter belonging to the Garrison rolled over at the time of landing, and a first-class First Class Sergeant in his 20s skull fracture. Seriously injured.

JGSDF has established an accident investigation committee to investigate the cause.

According to JGSDF, the helicopter was hovering, and the aircraft rolled over immediately after touching down, causing the rotor to break. Rikusa in the 40’s captain’s third grade, such as a bruise, was slightly injured.

The weather at the time of the accident was snowy and the wind was weak. There is a possibility that the snow on the surface of the ground flutters due to the wind-generated at the time of landing, and the driver loses visibility and steers wrong.
