Sudanese Air Force Antonov An-12 Aircraft Crashed Shortly After Takeoff

Sudanese Air Force Antonov An-12 is reported to have crashed shortly after takeoff from Geneina Airport in Western Sudan. The aircraft is said to have carried military staff, three judges and a WFP employee.

The aircraft had just delivered medical aid and was returning to Khartoum when it crashed. Initial reports suggest all 15 onboard have died.

The reasons for the crash were not immediately clear, and it was unclear how many people were onboard the aircraft.

A source at el-Geneina airport, from which the plane took off, said there were about 20 people on board, including three crew members, and all had been killed.

El-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, has seen deadly clashes between ethnic groups in recent days.

There is a heavy military presencein the city, which has received security reinforcements and visits by senior officials this week.
