Watch: Pilots Ejecting Moments Before MiG-23 Crashes During Airshow In Michigan

On Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, a privately owned two-seat MiG-23UB Flogger, registration N23UB/1038107, taking part in the Thunder Over Michigan airshow crashes crashed near the Waverly on the Lake apartment complex during the Thunder over Michigan airshow at Willow Run Airport (YIP/KYIP), Ypsilanti, Michigan.

The two pilots ejected at low altitude after noticing a loss of power, and one of them landed in Belleville Lake. Both survived with minor injuries.

Several photographs and videos of the incident were posted online.

Videos appeared to show two figures ejecting and parachutes deploying.

The aircraft struck unoccupied vehicles in the apartment complex’s parking lot. No one at the apartment complex nor the air show was injured.

This was the 25th year of the Thunder Over Michigan show, which started on Saturday and was set to conclude on Sunday. The show was stopped after the crash and spectators were asked to leave.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will conduct the investigation, the two agencies said.

The NTSB will take the lead in the investigation. The cause of the crash was not known.
