A Royal Malaysian Air Force McDonnell Douglas F/A-18D Hornet crashed on takeoff at Kuantan Airport. Both pilots ejected and survived.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force has confirmed that an incident involving one of its F/A-18D Hornet fighter aircraft occurred.
“We would like to inform you of an accident involving an F/A-18D Hornet at 9.05 pm Aug 21 at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport in Kuantan.
“We are taking immediate action and will update on the latest development,” said RMAF in a statement on Thursday.
Video of an explosion as a jet was taking off has gone viral on social media.
The crash involving a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F/A-18D Hornet tonight is believed to be the first for the fleet since entering service in 1997.
While the RMAF’s Hornet aircraft had previously been involved in several incidents, this is understood to be the first time one of the jets had crashed.
