Taiwan Mirage 2000 fighter jet crashes into the sea off Chihhang AB

The Republic Of China Air Force Dassault Mirage 2000-5EI crashed under unknown circumstances into the sea off Chihhang AB (RCQS). The pilot ejected safely and was rescued.

On 14 March 2022 at around 11:25 hrs LT, Chung-Hua Min Guo Kong Jun (RoCAF, Republic of China Air Force) Mirage 2000-5Ei serial 2017 was lost during a Combat Air Patrol (CAP) mission.

The Mirage crashed into the Pacific Ocean outside Taitung/Jhihhang airbase. The pilot managed to eject and has been rescued.

The RoCAF operates the Mirage 2000 with three squadrons at Hsinchu airbase, one Training Group (48th TG) and two Tactical Fighter Groups (41st TFG and 42nd TFG), all part of the 2nd Tactical Fighter Wing.

The RoCAF have sixty Mirage 2000s in its inventory, of which twelve Mirage 2000-5Di dual seat. Five aircraft have been lost so far, two Mirage 2000-5Ei single-seat and three Mirage 2000-5Di dual seats.

Since 1999, eight Mirage 2000 fighter jets have reportedly crashed in Taiwan, including Monday’s incident. Of these crashes, seven pilots have been rescued, while five have died in the line of duty.

Six Mirage 2000s have been damaged beyond repair, while 54 remain intact.
