Yakovlev Yak-9UM crash in Tanjil, S of Gippsland , Australia.  The plane crashed in a field 20 km W of Latrobe Valley Airport under unknown circumstances. The pilot died.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the fatal accident of a single engine Yakovlev Yak-9UM warbird aircraft, which occurred near Moe, Victoria, on Friday afternoon.

Initial information provided to the ATSB indicates the aircraft has collided with terrain approximately 20km west of Latrobe Valley Regional Airport.

Five transport safety investigators from Brisbane and Canberra will travel to the accident site shortly to begin the evidence collection phase of the investigation.

This will include the examination of the wreckage, interview witnesses, and obtain any available recorded data for analysis, amongst other activities.

The evidence collection phase will define the size and scope of the investigation and determine the expected timeframe for the completion of a final report.

A report will be published at the completion of the investigation. However, should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties.
